Departmental mission:

The mission of the EO Smith math department is to inspire a community of inquisitive mathematical learners who analyze and engage with the world around them. We accomplish this by creating a learning environment in which every student feels valued, respected, and supported. We empower all students to take risks, collaborate, communicate effectively, think critically, and persevere through challenges. We hold all students to high expectations and encourage all students to realize their full potential.

Why is this program important?

E.O. Smith’s Mathematics curriculum enables a student to apply critical thinking skills in solving problems of everyday life, compete in the high-performance workplace, develop connections among topics both within mathematics and between many other branches of learning, and acquire an appreciation for the beauty and intrinsic order of mathematics. Students can be successful in learning to value mathematics, become confident in their own abilities, become a problem solver, communicate and reason mathematically.

In this complex and changing world, students need to understand that mathematics provides opportunities and options for shaping their future. E.O. Smith understands that our students are multifaceted and approach the study of mathematics from a broad spectrum of attitudes, backgrounds, experience and needs.

Mathematical competence opens doors for students to be productive and successful. As Mike Lefkowitz, MIND Research Institute, states, “Studying mathematics not only will develop more engineers and scientists, but also produce more citizens who can learn and think creatively and critically, no matter their career fields. The workforce of tomorrow, in all fields, will demand it.”

Program Goals

Students who successfully complete the EO Smith math program can:
  • Create, interpret, use, and analyze expressions, equations and inequalities including building and interpreting functions that model relationships in context.
  • Apply the principles of statistics and probability to analyze, interpret data, reach and justify conclusions, and make inferences and predictions.
  •  Apply concepts of geometry, spatial reasoning, and measurement in the context of the world.
  •  Choose the appropriate mathematics to describe, understand, and analyze real-world situations with proficiency and confidence.
  •  Reason mathematically to solve problems and communicate with others.

Smith math department provided a challenging and stimulating experience that pushed me to ask questions and put in the work to succeed. I had always loved math, but beginning the calculus oriented classes was a tough transition for me. With the help of one-on-one tutoring from my math teacher, I was able to easily make the transition and better understand the concepts I was struggling with. My teachers noted the areas I needed improvement in and put in the extra effort to ensure that I fully learned the material. That support and guidance helped me to continue to advance with my level of math, and ultimately led me to the career path that I have followed. I was able to take challenging college courses through the high school program and apply these credits towards my college education.
