Statement of Guiding Principles

The Equity, Diversity, and Justice Committee of the Region 19 Board of Education was formed in September, 2020 to examine our actions, deliberations, decisions and policies with a clear and conscious regard to promoting, achieving and sustaining a school community which embodies and reflects its ongoing commitment to equity, diversity and justice.

We recognize that to succeed in this effort we must confront the reality of racism and racial injustice in our educational system, and address and overcome the impediments to achieving equity of access, opportunity and just treatment of Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) students.

E. O. Smith High School is not immune to the realities of racism and racial injustice, nor to the negative effects our policies and practices may have on BIPOC and historically marginalized members of our community. Recognizing this, we commit to achieve and sustain a diverse, equitable and just educational community, and pledge ourselves and E.O. Smith High School to the following:

  1. to embrace diversity in its broadest sense, by respecting diversity of viewpoints and experience, by expanding diversity in our teaching staff, and by providing a curriculum which includes the history, experience, accomplishments, and cultural richness of BIPOC individuals and communities in America;
  2. to identify and pursue the work necessary to realize equity of access and opportunity for all our students; and
  3. to confront and dedicate ourselves to eradicating discrimination and intolerance directed against members of our BIPOC and LGBTQIA+ communities, our students with disabilities, and any members of our community who are survivors of unjust and inequitable practices.

We have much work ahead of us to ensure a more inclusive, diverse, just and equitable future for all members of our community.  We are aware that each of us on this committee brings with us our own implicit biases which can inhibit our ability to see how our actions and decisions, no matter how well-intentioned, may fall short of our goals. We expect that we will make some mistakes along the way and invite you to tell us when we do, and assist us in addressing and correcting them.  We welcome our entire community to join us as partners in this effort to address here at E.O. Smith High School, with dedication, and urgency, an issue that has plagued America for centuries.

We are committed to transparency and understand that we are accountable to you, our E.O.

Smith community. What we ask of ourselves and of you is to respect each other and the views of others, and that all of us be willing to grow and learn from each other as we strive to make E.O Smith High School an anti-racist, inclusive and safe community for all its members.
