Open Letter to the E. O. Smith Community:

The year 2020 was marked by a number of major events and themes that will be with us for years to come.  One of these is the spotlight that was shone on the racism that persists in American society.  In response, the Region 19 Board of Education has created the Equity, Diversity, and Justice Committee.

The first action of the Committee has been to draft a Statement of Guiding Principles.  The purpose of this letter is to present these Principles to you.

To be clear, this statement of principles is not intended to be what we expect to do. It is an expression of how we intend to go about doing it. The substance of our efforts will be fleshed out on a broader, though yet to be defined, framework that is likely to include:

  • clear goals and actions
  • equity scorecard with metrics
  • identified accountability
  • ongoing community discourse

This letter is also an invitation to engage. To engage in whatever policy area or segment of the equity spectrum about which you feel passionate.  A call for you to join us on this journey, to help steer, to provide feedback, to build the plan, to start conversations, and to bring ideas to the table.  We will not be successful without you.

We also know that we have much to learn about each other as a community. We are not one mind or one voice.  However, we should be able to come together around the value of equity, diversity, and justice.

While we feel a sense of urgency, it is important that we get it right.  Be assured, we will remain focused, keep an open mind, and maintain engagement with our stakeholders as we progress through our goal to make the E.O. Smith an anti-racist and inclusive school community.
