Gregory Schaffer graduated from Edwin O. Smith High School in 1964. After graduating, he earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Central Connecticut State University and then a Masters of Science degree from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
After college, he worked for a number of different medical centers around New England. From 1974 to 1977 he was the director of emergency medical services for Eastern Connecticut, and from 1977 to 1980 he was the director of emergency medical services in New Britain, Connecticut. After this, he held executive positions in the McLean Hospital in Belmont, Massachusetts and at the Hospital of Saint Raphael in New Haven, Connecticut. He then stopped working in New England and from 1992 to 1995 he served as the Vice President of facilities and support services at Saint Vincent’s Medical Center, in Staten Island, New York. In 1995 he began working at the John Hopkins Bayview Medical center in Baltimore, Maryland. He was named president, in 1999 and continues to hold that title today.
He is an active member of his community as well, he serves as the secretary if the Southeast Baltimore Community Development Corporation and is the vice chairman of the Greektown Community Development Corporation. Mr. Schaffer is a past president of the Baltimore County Chamber of Commerce and he is a Lifeboard member of the Chesapeake & Potomac region of the American Red Cross. He is also a trustee of the American Kidney fund.
Mr. Schaffer has had numerous family members attend E.O. Smith, three brothers Gerald Schaffer ’63, Paul Schaffer ’66, and Christopher Schaffer ’67 and a total of six nieces and nephews.
