Class of 1961: Ralph J. Szymczak PDF Print E-mail

Ralph J. Szymczak graduated from E.O. Smith in 1961 and joined the Air Force for four years.  In the Air Force he worked as a cryptographic operator in Turkey and in Nebraska.   When he returned from the Air Force, he went to the University of Connecticut where he majored in English and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree. After college he went to the University of Pittsburgh School of Library and Information Sciences and earned a Masters degree in Library Science.  

Ralph SzymczakToday, Ralph works at Brandeis University in Massachusetts, where he is a top research and instruction librarian.  He works primarily with government documents and helping students with research.  He has received the employee of the year award and was also featured in the “Faces of Work” at Brandeis. 

In 1970, he married Elizabeth “Betsy” Gaunya an E.O. Smith graduate from the class of 1966.  Betsy currently works for the Department of Public Health for the state of Massachusetts as the director for the Division of Laboratory Response and Communications.  Ralph enjoys cooking, vacationing on Block Island, Rhode Island and the Berkshires, music and the performing arts, and spending time with his family.
