Physical Education is a required course for each year of high school attendance. Classes are coed, heterogeneous and reflect a wide range of abilities, interests and previous physical education and sports background. Class groups are scheduled by grades of 9-10 and 11-12. Scheduling follows the current philosophy of mainstreaming and programs for those with special needs are offered to fit needs. Students with temporary medical restrictions will have modified workouts provided by the instructor. The goal of Physical Education is to have students leave E.O. Smith with the skills and knowledge necessary to participate in a variety of physical activities, to maintain a healthy lifestyle, to understand the various effects of physical activity on one’s mind and body, and to develop interpersonal skills, and exhibit positive character traits during physical activity. Program Goals By the end of grade 12 at Edwin O. Smith High School, students will: - Demonstrate competency in many and proficiency in a few movement forms.
- Applies movement concepts and principles to the learning and development of motor skills.
- Exhibits a physically active lifestyle.
- Achieve and maintain a health-enhancing level of physical fitness.
- Demonstrate responsible personal and social behavior in physical activity settings.
- Demonstrate understanding and respect for differences among people in physical activity settings.
- Understand that physical activity provides opportunities for enjoyment, challenge, self expression, and social interaction.
