  • Talk to your school's guidance counselor. Tell him or her that you are interested in taking part in the Ag. Ed. program at E.O. Smith. Ask for an application and fill it out.
  • Once you've filled it out, return it to your guidance counselor and ask them to please send it as soon as possible.
  • After the application is received at the E.O. Smith Ag. Department you will receive a phone call asking you to come in for an interview.
  • At the interview you will meet with an advisor who will describe the program and how it will benefit you. You will then be asked questions concerning why you would like to be a part of the Ag Ed program.
  • The advisor will give you a homework assignment to be completed soon after. You will also be asked to get two letters of recommendation; one from a teacher and one from someone outside the family.
  • Ask your teachers and friends if they would be willing to fill out your recommendation letter. There will be a deadline set, so you need to make sure you give your teachers ample time to write the recommendation.
  • Once you've done your homework and the recommendations are handed in to the Ag. Ed. Department, you will be informed as to whether you were accepted into the program.
What it's like here

As a ninth grader I've only been in the Ag Ed program for a couple months. However, I can say that I've learned a lot from Ag and have been able to experience many new things I'd never picture myself doing. At the beginning of the year we learned how to work with bees!! It was so much fun! Even though you choose what you want to do in Ag before you enter the program, as freshmen you get to experience everything before making your final decision. When I first came I thought I wanted to go into horticulture, and I still have it in mind, but after seeing only some of what else there is I'm a little hesitant. Also being in Ag has allowed me to do so many things. One day instead of sitting in classes we took a field trip to the Big E! Another time we got to go on a whale watch. You get so many opportunities when you're in Ag and you have so much fun! Right now, we're doing CDE's, which is where you get to learn a certain task (such as poultry judging, landscape design, or natural resources) and then compete against other schools. The best part of this is that you get to choose which class you'd like to join and have a great time!
